Helping a friend with her bedroom redesign - A caption of what we did and 10 questions you can ask yourself to have a successful makeover as well.
The goal was to create a cozy and spacious feeling for this room. My friend asked for a calming space to allow her to enjoy her different hobbies: reading, drawing, and practicing yoga. Another important thing was for her to have a dedicated area to apply her daily skincare routine. She also wanted to keep her existing bed, desk, and bedding chest, so we also had to consider those.

The new layout we came up with maximized the room's floor space so that my friend could practice her yoga comfortably. We then added a thick rug so she won't have to open her yoga mat every time. The carpet also helped define the space and create that warm feeling we aimed for.
Other key elements in changing the room were the closed storage units. They allowed us to hide the "mess" and personal items and, at the same time, show my friend precious artifacts and souvenirs. We stacked the same units to create a vanity area.
Finally, we hung clear narrow shelves that kept the walls looking light and allowed extra space to display art. We finished the room with cushions, textiles, and a few straw items to give it that wishful, snug, and restful look.

And here are 10 questions you can ask yourself to guide you when redesigning your room.
What is your budget? This is pretty straightforward; just take into account a 10% surpass.
What do you already like about this room? It can be anything: a painting, a rug, that desk from your grandmother's house, the floor tiles, or the door handle. If there is something you like, make sure to incorporate it into your plans. It will make your design look cohesive, add your room some character, and save you money.
What do you hate about this room? Pay attention, and make sure you change it, whether it is the room layout, the atmosphere, or the color palate.
How are you going to use this space? Will you sleep, eat, study, or exercise in this room? What functions are needed here?
How are you using this space now? This is the moment to be honest and create a space for yourself, your true self, and not that 'Instagram' self. Acknowledge who you are and how you truly use your space. If you don't like to read, then don't waste space on a fancy reading nook, and if you are not a minimalist, make sure to have lots of storage space.
What are your rituals and shrines? This is not just for the believers out there. What makes you happy? A ritual is something you often do and take pleasure in, like drinking coffee near the window or doing yoga in the afternoon. So make a shrine for the things you love, and make sure you have a comfy seat near that window or a cozy rug for your yoga. Make a beautiful and accessible spot for what you love.
What inspires you? This is the fun part, create a Pinterest board or a file on your computer with images you love. From interior design images to art, colors, or places around the world, whatever comes to mind. Fifteen pics should be enough. Once done, go back and analyze them - what is it you liked in each one? the atmosphere? The colors? the layout? These insights will help you plan and shop for your makeover.
Take a photo and make a plan - Take a photo of the room as is. It will help you re-visit points 1 to 6, and it will be a cool memory to look back at once the makeover is done. Then have a sit and create a plan. You can draw or just write a list, but make sure you have a clear concept of the change you want to make.
Where, when, and how? Do your homework and plan where you want to buy what. Thanks to the internet, it is easy to see what every store has to offer, plan according to your size and budget restrictions, and if you are lucky, you can even order online. Then try to schedule the actual makeover day and make sure you have the help and tools needed to actualize your vision.
Go for it! This is the moment you've been waiting for, so make sure to enjoy it and take some pretty photos for a keepsake once done.
